How Much Does Cloth Diapering REALLY Cost?

This is the second blog in a series that we will be posting over the coming few weeks.

How many diapers do I need? How much does it cost to get started?

Newborns will need 12-15 diaper changes per day. Most families prefer to wash every other day, meaning you'll need a stash of at least 24-30 diapers to get you through. As your child gets older, they won't need as many diaper changes and you can get away with having a smaller diaper stash, if desired.

We've put together a few scenarios to help you get everything you need.

Remember, this is a one-time start-up cost that will get you everything you need – no future investments are required. Scenarios include all the diapers you need to wash every other day from birth to potty training.

Want the most cost effective, traditional cloth diapers?
8-10 covers
Approximately 40 prefold diapers (covers two sizes)
2 medium wet bags for the diaper bag
2 large wet bags/pail liners for the nursery
40 cloth wipes
laundry detergent
= About $300

Want a mix of cloth diaper styles and all the basic accessories?
12 prefolds
4 diaper covers
4-6 fitted diapers
6 pockets or all-in-one diapers
2 medium wet bags for the diaper bag
2 large wet bags/diaper pail liners for the nursery
40 cloth wipes
flushable liners
diaper friendly ointment
laundry detergent
= About $500

Looking for diapers that are simple to use and all the accessories you need? (Consider this for childcare situations)
24-36 all-in-one (AIO) diapers
2-3 medium wet bags for the diaper bag
2 large wet bags for the nursery
48 cloth wipes
diaper sprayer
flushable liners
diaper friendly ointment
laundry detergent
= About $800

Most families report spending $3,000 or more per child using disposable diapers including trash bags, disposable wipes, and rash creams. So although the start-up costs of cloth diapering might seem high, you will end up saving money in the long run (especially if you use cloth diapers for multiple children).
